After years of chasing fame and hedonistic excess in the bright lights of Las Vegas, Rusty ìThe Ravenî Diamond has returned home to Ocean City to piece his life back together. When he finds himself an innocent suspect in his landlordís brutal murder, Rusty abandons all hope of maintaining a tranquil existence. Acting on impulse, he digs into the investigation just enough to anger both the police and a local drug cartel.

As the unsolved case grows more complex, claiming new victims and inciting widespread panic, Rusty feels galvanized by the adrenaline heís been missing for too long. But his newfound excitement threatens to become an addiction, leading him headfirst into an underworld heís been desperately trying to escape.

Top Ten Tuesday – September 16, 2014

toptentuesday

The topic this week is …Top Authors I’ve Only Read One Book From But NEED to Read More

I have a tendency to read the first book in a series and then never moving on. So I have a lot of authors I’ve only read one book from that I would love to read more from! In no particular order:

  1. Chris Pavone … I read The Accident earlier this year and LOVED it! I also snatched up his debut, The Expats on my Nook when it was on sale for like $1.99 a few months back, but have yet to read it….
  2. Lee Child … I read Killing Floor  a few months ago and enjoyed it. But I have yet to continue on with the series … for no good reason at all … other than time 😉
  3. Marcia Clark … I read The Competition on a whim just last month and really, really enjoyed it. I also have her first book on my physical TBR shelf and I *NEED* to get to it soon!
  4. Chevy Stevens … I read Still Missing back in 2011 and really enjoyed it, but haven’t read anything else by Ms. Stevens … and I have another book of hers on my shelf (actually it’s an ARC that I was sent and never got to … oops)
  5. Karin Slaughter … I read Blindsighted last year and enjoyed it, but once again I have that terrible habit of starting with the first book in a series and then never going any further.
  6. Ted Bell … I read Hawke last year and well, I’m sure you can fill in the blanks (just follow the pattern that seems to be appearing rather obvious.)
  7. Scott Turow … It actually took me a couple of times to get into Presumed Innocent, but once I finally persevered past that 50 page mark I loved it! And have yet to read anything else by Mr Turow…
  8. James Rollins … I read Sandstorm while I was pregnant with Garrett and enjoyed it. But somewhere along the line I have managed to collect a few more of Rollins’ books on my shelves, but they continue to sit unread.
  9. Adam Mitzner … I scored an ARC of A Case of Redemption last year and enjoyed it a lot. Enough to make me go out and purchase Mr. Mitzner’s first book, which I never read. *Sigh*
  10. Kate White … I read Eyes on You in conjunction with a book tour and enjoyed it. I have had The Sixes on my shelf forever … I keep saying “one day”.

Wow … I have a really bad habit of reading an author one time with every intention of continuing on with the series or backlist just to proceed to fail, miserably.

Too many books … not enough time.

About the Book:
Phobic by Cortney Pearson
(The Forbidden Doors #1)
Publication date: September 8th 2014
Genres: Horror, Young Adult
PhobicSynopsis:

Fifteen-year-old Piper Crenshaw knows her house is strange. It’s never needed repairs since it was built in the 1800s, and the lights flicker in response to things she says. As if those things aren’t creepy enough, it’s also the place where her mother committed murder.

To prove she’s not afraid of where she lives, Piper opens a forbidden door, which hides a staircase that leads to the ceiling. That’s when the flashbacks of the original residents from 1875 start, including a love affair between two young servants. Each vision pulls Piper deeper into not only their story, but also her house. Piper confides in her best friend, Todd, whom she’s gradually falling for, but even he doesn’t believe her. At least, not until her house gets axed during a prank, and the act injures Piper instead, cutting a gash the size of Texas into her stomach.

Piper realizes her house isn’t haunted—it’s alive. To sever her link to it, she must unravel the clues in the flashbacks and uncover the truth about her mother’s crime, before she becomes part of her house for good.

Executive PowerBlurb: Returning from a covert mission, Mitch Rapp was publicly hailed by the president for his role in the fight against terrorism. After years of working in the shadows, Rapp was caught in the media spotlight – and marked for death by virtually every terrorist in the world. Now a CIA advisor, Rapp is ready to battle terror far from the front lines. But when a Navy SEAL team in the Philippines is ambushed, all evidence points to a leak within the U.S. State Department. And a greater threat lurks – a ruthless assassin working for the most powerful men in the Middle East, who are bent on igniting a world war. With the world watching, Rapp must hold back the flames of Armageddon…

Review: This book was from my own shelves, all opinions expressed below are my own.

This is the 4th book in the Mitch Rapp series (or 6th, depending on how you look at it; I go by publish date) and I still really like this series.

This book was really good. There was a lot going on in this book. Personally I prefer the action that involves Mitch Rapp. Unfortunately, there was a large part of this book that didn’t have Rapp involved at all. (Until the end when it all came full circle). I wouldn’t say that this made me dislike the book, but I would have preferred Mitch to be more involved throughout the whole thing. That’s just my personal preference, though.

The writing was good. The storyline was interesting. The characters were well-developed (though I need more Anna/Mitch interaction!!). I recommend starting this series from the beginning, I don’t think you’ll understand who Mitch is without some background.

Overall I’m glad to say that this is another strong installment in the Mitch Rapp series and I look forward to getting to the next one … eventually 🙂

One book this week, for review:

Angel KillerA mysterious hacker who identifies himself only as “Warlock” brings down the FBI’s website and posts a code in its place. The code hides the GPS coordinates of a Michigan cemetery, where a dead girl is discovered rising from the ground … as if she tried to crawl out of her own grave.

Born into a dynasty of illusionists, Jessica Blackwood is destined to become its next star – until she turns her back on her troubled family, and her legacy, to begin a new life in law enforcement. But FBI consultant Dr. Jeffrey Ailes’s discovery of an old copy of Magician magazine will turn Jessica’s carefully constructed world upside down. Faced with a crime that appears beyond explanation, Ailes has nothing to lose – and everything to gain – by taking a chance on an agent raised in a world devoted to achieving the seemingly impossible.

The body in the cemetery is only the first in the Warlock’s series of dark miracles. Jessica is thrust into the media spotlight, with time ticking away until the next crime – but can she confront her past to embrace her gifts and stop a depraved killer?

If she can’t, she may become his next victim.

Since I had so much fun with this challenge last year, I’ve decided to sign up again this year!! Definitely looking forward to it!

I’ve decided to go with the same level I did last year:

ripnineperilfirstSo basically this means I am committing to four books between September 1 and October 31.

Mystery.
Suspense.
Thriller.
Dark Fantasy.
Gothic.
Horror.
Supernatural.

Those are the types of books you read for this challenge …. and right up my alley!

I have a stack of books picked out. Whether or not I stick with them, who knows (seeing as how A Discovery of Witches was on last year’s list and I didn’t get to it, I’d *love* to see myself reading it this year). I also have two review e-galleys that will fit this challenge which I will for sure be including.

Father of FearBlurb: A father returns home to find that his family has been kidnapped and the only way to save their lives is for him to kill another innocent person…

So begins a journey that will force Special Agent Marcus Williams of the Shepherd Organization to question all that he believes, unearth his family’s dark legacy, and sacrifice everything to save those he loves. In order to stop the serial murderer whom the media has dubbed the Coercion Killer, Williams must enlist the help of one of the world’s most infamous and wanted men…the serial killer Francis Ackerman Jr.

Rippling with intensity, charged with tension, and brimming with a relentless spirit of humanity, FATHER OF FEAR is the latest evidence that Ethan Cross is one of the finest suspense novelists on the planet

Review: I received a copy of this book for free via the publisher in conjunction with a blog tour, all opinions expressed below are my own.

I was introduced to Ethan Cross back in 2012 when I was given the opportunity to review The Prophet here on the blog. So I was excited when I was contacted again to be able to read the latest installment in the Shepherd Organization series, Father of Fear. I jumped on the opportunity immediately and was ready to meet Marcus and the Ackerman’s all over again.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was gruesome. It was addicting. It was a roller coaster of emotions. I really, really liked it. But I was lost at times with the characters. I don’t know if it’s because I still haven’t read the first book and it’s been nearly 2 full years since I read the second book or what the deal was. But I had trouble remembering who was who and what was what.

Luckily that didn’t have much affect on my overall feelings of this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline of the Coercion Killer … although this book was about so much more. There were some twists and turns along the way that I didn’t see coming. And the ending left me wanting more! And the door is definitely open for another installment!

All in all, I would definitely recommend this book. And while I want to recommend this book to everyone, I have to do so with the recommendation of reading the other books first. But most definitely a great read!!

Two review books this week.

ExposedOn June 9, 2008, the butchered body of Travis Alexander was found in his Arizona home with twenty-nine knife wounds, his throat slit, and a gunshot to the head. The prime suspect was Alexander’s ex-girlfriend, Jodi Arias, who claimed she killed Travis in self-defense. Soon, graphic stories about the Mormon couple’s relationship and their lurid sexual encounters emerged, launching a trial filled with sex and deception and raising substantial questions about Arias’s deceit-filled world.

Award-winning broadcast journalist Jane Velez-Mitchell unearths Jodi’s history to illustrate the disturbing pattern of a murderer in the making. With insider accounts from those closest to Travis and Jodi, she separates fact from fiction, reporting on the bizarre and explicit stories that emerged during the riveting trial.

The Founders' PlotThe Founders’ Plot
takes you into the sordid and dangerous world of illegal immigration, the shady corridors and back rooms where devious politicians ply their trade, and sheds light on suspicious Supreme Court decisions. It turns hot-button contemporary issues into a compelling narrative that puts a human face on what are, for most, only distant abstractions.

The newly-elected California governor pushes through a stringent immigration law that’s declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. But the decorated Vietnam vet ignores the ruling and continues implementing the law, igniting a clash between federal, state, and judicial power that threatens to jar the country’s political and justice systems.

READING CHALLENGES 2014

#TBRChallengeRBR Checkpoint 8

2014tbrbutton

Well, here we are at the eighth TBR Challenge checkpoint.

I continue to be one book behind in this challenge, but I was able to knock out A Time to Kill by John Grisham in August. I still can’t believe that I had never read this book before. I really, really enjoyed it and highly recommend it to everyone. I am so glad that I read it; especially at a time when we have had a lot of unrest in the Midwest because of race issues. Definitely a timeless classic book in my opinion.

I’m not sure where I’ll head next with my list for this challenge. I have picked up The Dante Club and Relic a couple of times and set them both aside … I have a feeling I will need to use both of my alternates. Here’s what I’ve still got left to choose from, which one would you choose next!??!:

  1. The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl
  2. The Hunt for Atlantis by Andy McDermott
  3. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
  4. Relic by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child
  5. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

Alternates:

  1. Mallory’s Oracle by Carol O’Connell
  2. McNally’s Secret by Lawrence Sanders
